Boris Johnson Quotes on the Burqa and the Niqab

Former UK Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, has shared his views on the face-covering garments worn by Muslim women –  the burqa and the niqab.

Below are some of his noteworthy quotes on the matter, which many have noted as politically incorrect.

“If you say that it is weird and bullying to expect women to cover their faces then I totally agree, I would go further and say that it is absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes.” – Boris Johnson, The Star, 14 August 2018

“I’m here solely on a humanitarian mission because you’ve been here all day, and you’ve been incredibly patient and I feel very sorry for you because I have nothing to say, except to offer you some tea.” – Boris Johnson, The Star, 14 August 2018

“If a constituent came to my MP’s surgery [one-on-one meetings between MPs and their constituents] with her face obscured, I should feel fully entitled… to ask her to remove it so that I could talk to her properly. If a female student turned up at school or at a university lecture looking like a bank robber, then ditto: those in authority should be allowed to converse openly with those that they are being asked to instruct.” – Boris Johnson, Document, 12 August 2018
